Why Some Women Don’t Go After Top Jobs: “The Challenge Is To Shift The Way We Think About Ourselves”
2:54 pm, February 11th | by Amy Tennery
Author Courtney Martin and Katie Orenstein, the founder of The Op-Ed Project weighed in on why there aren’t “more Sheryl Sandbergs” in the business world, in an op-ed today for CNN: “The notion that women lack confidence implies a negative judgment. It’s viewed as a weakness, coded as feminine. But some recent social science research reveals a more likely and complex explanation: People do things because people who look and talk like them or share the same background do those things… The challenge is to shift the way we think about ourselves. We must see our peers and ourselves as leaders who have a right and a responsibility to weigh in on the matters of our day.”
Martin and Orenstein go on to explain that creating more visibility for female leaders may inspire women to seek the “dream jobs” — in business and beyond.
