Women’s Reactions To Obama’s Speech Last Night: Beatlemania Edition

The Democratic Convention wrapped up last night with President Obama formally accepting the nomination for a second term as President of the United States, and giving maybe the third-best speech of the week. Even though plenty of attention was paid during the convention to women’s issues, Obama’s remarks were still notable for their specific focus on the importance of choice when it comes to women’s health. Also interesting was his insistence on using the pronouns “she” and “her” when he spoke rhetorically about education, healthcare and immigration. The archetypal young American who features prominently in just about every political speech was female for Obama. That was interesting to see, and certainly new.

But oh man, were the women in the crowd loving the speech. You can see it in its entirety here, courtesy of CNN:

The woman in the bright yellow blazer at 34:16 kills me. She is so fired up, and so cute about it. The fervor in the arena felt sometimes more like what you see at a concert than a traditional political rally, but it was heartening to see so much excitement in a political season that’s been so far dominated by apathy and pessimism. Whatever your affiliation might be, it’s hard not to feel something when you see such a passionate reaction to the President’s words.

The feeling I have when I see the ‘passionate’ reaction is fear. Please DO NOT decide the fate of our country because someone makes you feel good….good grief actors can do that. Listen to the substance, judge the history. I saw so many with the look as if they were in love….scares me to death!
