Is It Okay To Work A Lot When You Have A Newborn?
6:32 pm, February 13th | by Hillary Reinsberg
Is it okay to work all the time as a new mother? It’s an issue no one really wants to tackle, but researchers are finally exploring it. A UC Irvine researcher says she doesn’t see it as being negative.
In a personal essay on the topic in today’s LA Times, a doctor asks UC Irvine professor and researcher Wendy Goldberg to weigh in:
“The only negative effects were found with very intensive, full-time employment early on. We have to look at other factors that affect child achievement and behavior. Maternal work isn’t the whole story by any means.”
So there you have it. The professor’s advice: don’t haul too hard right after the baby comes. But if you’re the type who’s working 15-hour days with a newborn, chances are you’re not listening to a professor’s advice. So, just keep doing what you’re doing, we guess.
