Start-Up Incubator Tweets: “Techs Are The P—y Of The Start-Up Scene”

The York Butter Factory, which, curiously, has nothing to do with factories or dairy products of any kind, recently sent out an offensive tweet to promote its co-working space for tech entrepreneurs. The Melbourne-based company, which would later comment that it “didn’t mean to offend anyone,” according to Smart Company, might want to work on that particular goal because the tweet, well, definitely offended a lot of anyones:
“Techs are the p—y of the start-up scene, fill the club with them and the business guys will follow. Got tech chops? @YorkButter wants you!”
Ah, boy. That’s not good.
Sure this tweet was a comically stupid thing to send out. And the person who sent it probably didn’t think things over and (hopefully) realized shortly thereafter just how dumb a joke it was.
That being said, it certainly does have shades of the “bro fest culture” (as Smart Company put it) the tech start-up scene has been battling lately. And while Melbourne is a long way from Silicon Valley, it’s easy to see the similarities between this latest instance of sexism and the queasy accusations lobbed against the tech field in recent months. So let’s just hold off on the “p-word” analogies for he time being.
